Torches mean light and heat while exploring. It could be valuable Ore that you need to build new things! If you pass any different colored dirt in your travels, you should go mining. Right-clicking on a stack of items in the inventory picks up half the stack. Hit X to equip these items on the fly and X to switch between them. The L and R slots in the center of your hotbar are your quick slots. You can use this to run away from an enemy while still attacking them.
